ORGANISATIONAL STAFF SUPPORT
ROB CANON
My interest in offering a supportive role for staff originates from my time working within industry. I have found my experiences of resolution of conflict within the workplace to be beneficial to several organisations within my private practice in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. I have collaborated with the Occupational Health Department of Bradford Metropolitan District Council in returning staff back to work following personal, traumatic and stressful situations. The Social Services Care team employed at Calderdale Metropolitan District Council in Halifax have also benefited from this service as have employees from Calderdale Mencap, an organisation offering support to people with learning difficulties. Also those employed at Yorkshire Water a large Utility company. It is my aim to continue this service for organisations within the Cornwall and Devon area.
I also collaborate with organisations offering Employee Assistance Programmes, such as PEC-BUPA in providing services to Industry, Finance, Commerce and Care Organisations as well as Local Government. For those who encounter difficulties within their lives, either personal or work related, having a disruptive effect, I offer a professional service, with a view to aid staff performance. I provide a confidential service, working with short term interventions of between 6 and 10 sessions with the main focus on solutions, aiming to prevent a build up of stress, and promoting a return to emotional stability. I offer help and support through difficult personal circumstances, which may have had an unsettling or disruptive effect on others within the organisation.
I seek to develop and improve communications and understanding within organisations between staff and management. Recognising that the focus of organisations is often to maximise production capacity within their company, can sometimes mean that recognition for effort is not seen, or the needs of employees are missed. It can lead to disquiet amongst staff, where, the feeling of being “unimportant” or a feeling of being discounted, can often move towards unhelpful or disruptive behaviours. This is a scenario, which, if it is allowed to develop, is at least unhelpful and at worst destructive. No one benefits from the conflict, which ensues. Sides become entrenched, and it may be as simple as no-one wanting to admit fault or blame.
Offering counselling and psychotherapeutic support for employees on an Employer Assisted Programme (EAP) basis, in no way compromises the confidentiality required in reaching a resolution. So, although an employer may pay for the sessions, the content is never disclosed. It is an essential part of the building of trust within the working relationship.
